About the event

A little background information on our 4 esteemed panelists:

Dr. Petros Kotidis has been in the high-tech industry for more than thirty years and has commercialized numerous technologies in Life Sciences, Safety/Security, Industrial Process Control and Energy markets. He is currently serving as a Senior Commercialization Advisor for In-Q-Tel, the investment branch of the CIA and the Intelligence Community, with particular focus on commercializing technologies with critical implications for US national competitiveness and security. He has advised numerous small and large high-tech companies in the areas of strategic business development, technology commercialization, capital raising and expansion into new markets. Most recently, he was CEO at Block Engineering and Block MEMS, offering laser-based, chemical analysis systems for the Oil & Gas, Defense & Security and Environmental Monitoring markets. Prior to that, he was VP of Marketing & Business Development at Axsun Technologies, a high-tech, optical Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) company with products in the Telecommunications and Medical Devices markets. He joined Axsun from Nortel Networks, a leading optical telecommunications company, where he led strategic acquisitions and corporate investments. Prior to that he worked at Textron Systems, a defense manufacturer of smart weapons, industrial control and optical systems, where he was responsible for the development and market introduction of new optoelectronic products. Earlier in his career, he worked as a Principal Scientist at AVCO Research Laboratory, a legendary organization that led the early development of new lasers and aerospace applications.

Dr. Kotidis has Ph.D. and M.S. in Aeronautics from MIT with a minor from the Sloan School of Management at MIT, and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. He has been awarded 26 patents for various optoelectronic and algorithmic inventions.

Judith Underwood is an entrepreneur, educator and an environmentalist. She is the Co-Founder of the Blue Incubator (Blue Institute Labs, PBC), a Public Benefit Corporation, which will be the first BlueTech hub (Blue Innovation Center) on the US Eastern Seaboard with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean serving entrepreneurs, and the Blue Cluster of academia, government agencies and established companies who need share, collaborative on-sight services and reliable ocean access for testing, training, and teaching.  Judith is also the Founder of its sister institution, the Blue Institute at Cape Cod Bay, a non-profit global hub for water education & research. Both the Blue Incubator and the Blue Institute focus on water security and climate change solutions. Judith has 20+ years of scientific development & technology transfer work at research and educational institutions including MIT, the United Nations, and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy.

Dr. Alex Margulis is the COO of the Mansfield Bio-Incubator. He has more than 20 years of science and business development experience in the Life Science industry. Trained as a cellular and molecular biologist, his accomplishments include a dozen authored scientific papers and numerous abstracts. In business development, Dr. Margulis increased sales by 200% within two years in the US and Canada, placing the Capital Equipment instruments into world-class academic and biotech/pharma accounts in the Boston area. He is currently building a world-class life science innovation ecosystem in the Southeastern Massachusetts through Mansfield Bio-Incubator serving as a centerpiece. Margulis has served as a Judge for International BioGENEius Challenge for the past three years.

Sarah Tao, Ph.D. is the Senior Director of External Innovation for Biologics, Global Business Development & Licensing at Sanofi Partnering.  In this role, she is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and investing in external technologies that align with Sanofi’s strategy for Biologics-based therapies.  Dr. Tao joined Sanofi in 2017 with successive roles as Technology Lead for Biologics Research, and then Global External Technology and Innovation Lead for Large Molecules Research.  Prior to Sanofi, Dr. Tao was a Senior Manager of New Technologies at CooperVision creating novel external research programs focused on advanced digital ophthalmic devices; and was also a Senior Member of the Technical Staff in the MEMS Design Group at Draper Laboratory leading programs in drug delivery and tissue engineering.   She received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University and her B.S. in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Tao has received numerous accolades for her contributions to the field of biomaterials and drug delivery, including the Controlled Release Society Eurand Grand Prize.
